Roles of Women
"I would eat my breakfast like any other morning, clear the table like any other morning and do the housework like any other morning."
Women on the home front had two main roles: traditional and war. The traditional role involved caring for and raising a family. That involved managing rations and waiting at home for loved-ones fighting. The war role was brought about by the government's need for women to assist the nation’s efforts in industry, agriculture, civil defence and community welfare and by supporting the armed forces. The roles and accomplishments of women during the 1940s were often downplayed due to the fact that they had working husbands who took the spotlight. Many housewives were not always appreciated for what they did and were told to always put their man first.
