How Women Dressed in the 1940’s
"My mother, who is always good about things like that, would buy me a new summer evening dress to wear; and my two older sisters, who would probably be going too, would arrange my hair and lend me perfume to dab behind my ears and on the hem of my dress so I would swish up a glamorous smell when I walked."
A put-together woman in the 1940’s would be appropriately dressed for every occasion, has good posture, and keeps herself well groomed. Women’s street clothes include skirts and nice tunics. Dresses would be long sleeved and high necked. Hats would be made from material that will have a protective brim. Coats would be simply cut and trimmed the shoes would most likely be sturdy low heels. Dress clothes are worn on afternoon occasions, such as parties, receptions, formal dinners and so on. These dresses typically will be made of rayon, silk prints, and crepes, taffeta, organdy and voile. These outfits have more elaborate trimming, lower neck lines and shorter sleeves.
